Hope Church

We have too much of a hero complex. Maybe it is our Americanism coming out, in thinking we are the superior saviors of the world. But I think it is mostly our pride manifesting itself in a sense of superiority over anyone at anytime that we deem as inferior. It so easy, even on a missions trip to think, “I’m here to teach you! Now quietly sit and listen to my pearls of wisdom fall from my lips.”

But that doesn’t work very well in God’s kingdom. And it is completely incongruent with the gospel. Gospel is for the meek. It is given to the lowly. It is about the nothings being used. Its about a humiliated Christ becoming a substitute to redeem a nothing, like me. And our life and ministry stumble out of that course. One of my favorite quotes of all time is, “we are just poor beggars telling other poor beggars where to find bread.” That was my experience today.

We began teaching our Nicaraguan brothers and sisters in Christ. Through our time I don’t know if any of them were help or convicted, but I sure was. I saw my need to acknowledge my daily dependence on God through prayer. I saw the warmth of old friends that love Jesus and love me and express both loudly. I heard through my friend how my heart must heave with sorry over the lost in my city. And hopefully this poor beggar pointed some other beggars in the right direction too.
